Almenara Golf course
Course: Almenara Golf course
Country: SPAIN, Region: Andalucia, Province: Malaga, Coast: Costa del Sol
The three 9 holes courses (Los Pinos, Los Lagos and Los Alcornoques) can be combined into 3 different 18 holes courses. The three courses each have their own character but all share undulating fairways, bunkers, winding streams and water obstacles. The holes are lined with cork or pine trees and the views are stunning. The greens at Almenara are immaculate.

"Played Pinos and Lagos. Course was overall in very good condition. Some challenging drives with the water and sloping fairways but the greens and fairways were very good.
Best condition I had seen it in compared to previous years" - Mickyj96

Found the course in great conditions. I personally like Lagos & Pinos. Restaurant a bit slow in service but we are there for the golfing conditions. Greens where faster than expected.

Many new changes since the new ownership in April 2016. The last 2 years unfortunately Almenara had a bad reputation due to its quality and poor investments from the past owners. Now Almenara is back in control and able to re-invest in their course again. Almost all bunkers now have new sand and drainage system. New bermuda and rye grass around all bunkers. Rough fertilized to improve its growth. New greenkeeper who has greatly improved the putting area with micro spiking and other tools. Bermuda grass on all fairways in great condition. Another 60 buggies added to the fleet, now there are enough buggies for the afternoon players. I recommend to give Almenara another try.

Althoug Almenara Golf is considered as one of the popular golf courses in the Costa del Sol, we have to say that after the visit we had to their facilities, it changes completelly our way to think after 10 years of professional relationships with them. This great 27 holes golf course is located in the middle of the best golf courses of the European country, next to Valderrama at 500 meters and La Reserva de Sotogrande, that belongs to the same business group. Sotogrande property has realised that they have to change the maintenance tasks and stuff that they were use to, and after a long year of changes in their greenkeeping plans, they decided to change the whole grass of their fairways and rough into bermuda.
The truth is that after having played 18 holes from the layout Alcornoques and Lagos we finished with a really positive impression. They have improved a lot in the fairways seeding bermuda and the greens are cutted daily with manual machines keeping the general conditions of the golf course as one of the tops of the Costa del Sol. Sometimes our clients could think that they may try another golf courses, but from this article, we can say that its time to see and feel the real change that this course has had. That the average rate and relation quality price is the best of the area and that if you come and play 18, you will repeat to complete the 27 holes it has.

Almenara is a 27 hole 5star Hotel and Golf complex situated in Sotogrande it comprises of 27 holes of golf resulting in three 9 hole courses Los Lagos, Los Pinos and Los Alcornoques. In close proximity to Almenara are some of the finest golf courses in Europe - Valderrama, La Reserva and Sotogrande. A mixed group of 16 Marbella residents with handicaps ranging from 4 to 36 booked through Golf Service and played Los Pinos (The Pines) and Los Alcornoques (The Acorns) on a very windy Monday in February 2011.
The Course and Hotel are well signposted and therefore quite easy to find there is also ample car parking and signs to the Clubhouse and Golf Courses are very clear. On entering the pro shop I encountered a group of hotel guests that were arranging to go out on the course, they were being dealt with by the Caddymaster in a very off handed and discourteous way. This continued when I produced our golf voucher from Golf Service, I was handed a receipt and told in no uncertain terms to produce this for the buggies and be on the tee by 1.00pm, no happy smiling faces here. On arriving promptly at the tee we found that there was no Starter or Marshall and there were two groups in front of us waiting to tee off. Whilst waiting to tee off the snack bar arrived and informed us that if we wanted any food on the course we should order now as he would not be around again that day.
COURSE –We started off on the Los Pinos Course with a downhill par 5 and good drive should put you in good shape for a par. The 4 th hole is a very eye catching par 3 with an elevated green surrounded with Pines. On reaching the 7 th tee the oncoming wind gave the course a bite with us all struggling to make it to the green on the final 3 holes in regulation. Then on to the next nine - Los Alcornoques this is a very picturesque course with lots of water and two downhill par 3’s that are very difficult to club especially in the windy conditions we were experiencing. Good straight ball striking is required on this course with the bunkers cleverly positioned to snap up your ball if you keep too far away from the water. The fairways and greens were in very good condition and there are distance markers placed on all fairways and also on sprinkler heads.
CLUBHOUSE – Large clubhouse with nice terrace with views over the course, sea and mountains. Drinks are very reasonably priced and service is efficient but not friendly.
CONCLUSION – All 16 golfers would return to play the course again. It is a very good and enjoyable challenge for all levels of handicaps. It is also a very pretty course well maintained with a good variation of holes which will require you to use most clubs in your bag. However once again the staff working at the club bring you back down to earth they were efficient but off handed and I did not see one smile from any member of staff all day. Lovely golf course but not 5 star service.
